The mine site is located neaz the town of Pryor in Huerfano County about 1.5
miles west of the Pryor exit (Rouse Road) off of Interstate 25. The permit area lies within the S W 1/4 Section 19,
T29S R65 W of the 6th Principle Meridian. The permit area under consideration for termination of jurisdiction and
fmal liability release is 138 acres of which approximately 22 acres was disturbed and subsequently reclaimed.
The New Pryor Strip Mine was permitted by Viking Coal Company. The permit was issued effective November 9,
1982 and a bond was submitted. The permit was later transferred to American Fuels, Ina and operations commenced
shortly after and continued incompliance with the Rules for coal mining for approximately one yeaz.In late 1984, the
operation went into temporary cessation and in 1986 the permit was permanently revoked by the Mined Land
Reclamation Boazd.
The mine site was reclaimed by the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division using money from a grant from
the Office of Surface Mining, a branch of the U.S. Department of Interior. Final reclamation was completed on
Mazch 18, 1992 for a total cost of $83,260.00. A total of 22 acres was graded to approximate original contour,
topsoiled, and revegetated. Stability of the reclaimed land, successful revegetation of grasses and fortis,
minimization of hydrologic impacts within the permitted azea, and prevention of hydrologic impacts outside the
permitted azea demonstrate that the site has been successfully reclaimed over the past l3 years.
Written comments, objections, and requests for an informal conference or a formal public heazing before the
Mined Land Reclamation Boazd may be submitted to the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology, 1313
Sherman St, Rm 215, Denver, CO 80203.
Sincerel ,
~Ca--
K t Gorham
Environmental Protection Specialist R
Certified Receipt No.: 7004 1350 0001 1635 8372
Return Receipt Requested
Office of Office of Colorado
Mined Land Reclamation Atlive and Inactive Mines Geological Survey
