III IIIIIIIIIIIII III
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
David H. Getches, Executive Director
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C. SHELTO N, Director
Richartl D. Lamm
Governor
DATE: May 2, 1985
T0: Susan Mowry
FROM: Randall Price
RE: ARCO 1600 Permit Revision and Annual Hydrologic Report
I have reviewed the ARCO permit revision and annual hydrologic report for
1984. ARCO proposes to extend its present mining boundary to the Minnesota
Creek divide to the south. My review was limited to ground water issues. The
following are my comments and concerns.
1. Based on current water level s, permeability data from monitoring wells,
and known mine inflows a calculation should be made to determine the extent of
dewatering of overburden in the proposed permit area.
2. Calculations should be submitted to show the extent of surface
subsidence in the proposed permit area.
3. Table 2.8.1X of the permit application is measured spring yields. Some
springs show intermittant flow of extreme volume fluctuation. Spring G-22
has flows that range from 0 to 208 gallons per minute. Other springs have
similar fluctuations, J-7, G-14, G-6, G-24, and G-28. One spring that is
noticeably different is WCC-24 which has a regular flow of between 48 and 60
gallons per minute. What geologic/hydraulic mechanism would explain this
constant flow.
/ph
cc: Bob Liddle
Doc.
