Hartman
St•~te Historic Preservation Officer
Colorado Historical Society
13~J0 Broadway
De:~ver, CO 80203-2137
De•~r Sir:
Th~3 purpose of this letter is to ask your assistance in
obtaining relief from having to conduct a cultural resource
su:cvey on property included in our amendment to an existing
pit permit, M-90-144, pending with the MLRD. Your agency
re~~uested a cultural resource survey be done on the
pr~~perty. This requirement will create a financial
ha:cdship and has already created a costly delay. We would
eg:cee to the survey if we or anyone else suspected that
an~~thing of significance would be found. To our knowledge
no known sites are located near the area. The property
ow~ler, who has extensive holdings in the area indicates
th+zt nothing indicating prehistoric sites has ever been
fond on property in the area.
If we wanted to build a K-Mart on the site, we would not be
re~luired to complete a survey. It seems that to require
this expense without reason to suspect something of
si~3nificance exists on the site is ludicrous. The Arkansas
Ri'+er is a considerable distance away from the site and the
lo~~al drainages are hardly significant. We have already
mined approximately hnlf the proposed disturbed area and
have not seen a chip, flake, or other evidence of anything
of significance.
Your prompt consideration of this request will be
ap~~reciated.
Sincerely,
Jolin T.
