<br />1 <br /> <br /> <br />I, <br />I <br />I <br />I~ <br />i~ <br />5.2.5 Laboratory Chemicals <br />The proper procedures for responding to a spill of a lab reagent is as follows: <br />Acids: <br />• An acid resistant suit (e.g. rubber apron, and complete protective equipment including rubber <br />shoes, rubber over-boots, eye protection, face shield, rubber elbow length gloves and <br />respirator with appropriate filtering protection) will be worn. <br />• Contain the spill using absorbent socks and dividers located in the spill kits in both the wet <br />and metallurgical labs. <br />• Carefully, neutralize the spill using lime located in buckets in the work area or flush spill area <br />with large amounts of water. These buckets are labeled for this application specifically. <br />Provide for adequate ventilation as carbon dioxide gas may be generated by the reaction. <br />• Used absorbent socks should be disposed of in a sealable bucket and the mop and bucket <br />used in the cleanup should be completely rinsed in the acid sink. <br />Bases: <br />• Wear a chemical resistant suit (e.g. rubber apron, and complete protective equipment <br />including rubber shoes, rubber over-boots, eye protection, face shield, rubber elbow length <br />gloves and a respirator with appropriate filtering protection). <br />• If the caustic soda sodium hydroxides is dry, shovel up any spill and dispose of the solid in <br />the base sink with an excessive amount of water. <br />• If the caustic is in solution then use absorbent socks to contain the spill and add large <br />amounts of water. After the water has been added, neutralize the solution with a dilute acid <br />solution. Used, absorbent socks should be disposed of in a sealable bucket and the mop <br />and bucket used in the clean up should be completely rinsed and disposed of in an <br />appropriate manner that complies with State and Federal Regulations. <br />Sodium Cyanide: <br />• If water is present, aself-containing breathing apparatus may be necessary. <br />• For a dry spill, shovel the contents into a sealable bucket and label appropriately. Remove <br />the contents to ADR for disposal io the VLF. <br />• For liquid spills, contain the area with the absorbent socks and flush the spill area with <br />Calcium Hypochlorite and large amounts of water. Used absorbent socks should be <br />disposed of in a labeled sealable bucket and the mop and bucket used in the cleanup should <br />be completely rinsed and disposed of in an appropriate manner that complies with State and <br />Federal Regulations (contact the Environmental Resources Department). _ <br />Cunels and Crucibles: <br />• The lab produces cupels and crucibles that contain recoverable metals, including lead. <br />Cupels and crucibles are handled in a manner intended to minimize the potential for spillage. <br />While the spillage would usually be within the laboratory facility, some debris could be <br />released to the ground during transport to the storage area, or during transfer to trucks used <br />far shipping of these materials to facilities for recovery of metals values. In the event of such <br />a release, the material must be picked up in its entirety and placed with the materials to be <br />recycled for metals recovery. <br />34 <br />
