Mr. Joe Dudnsh
Jnrtunry 5, 1994
Pnge 5

Groundwater Monitorine
1. Wells PAW-3 and PAW-4 are located at the New Elk Mine not the Golden Eagle
Mine as indicated in the comment. Further, these wells were installed to monitor refuse
material which was moved during the diversion of the Purgatoire River. These wells could
not monitor the mine development refuse pile at the New Elk Mine because they are on the
south side of the river, whereas the development refuse pile is on the north side of the river.
The annual sample is collected in November at the low point of the hydrograph and as such,
some of these shallow wells have very little water to sample. Basin will make every effort
to collect water samples in the future.
2. The notes in the report indicate that there was not enough water in the well to collect
a sample. In the future, Basin will make every effort to collect water samples from this well.
Summary
1. Explanations in the above issues indicate why data was not collected from various
stations. The words "No Flow Recorded" on Table 1-14 for CHC-I and LCS-1 indicate that
there was no water at the station or "Dry".
2. No comment necessary.
3. No comment necessary.
4. No comment necessary.
Colorado Division of Wildlife
1. The fish and wildlife section of the Permit Document has been modified to reflect the
diversity of wildlife species these habitats support. In addition, the text has been modified
to reflect the minimal amount of surface disturbance planned within the permit area as a
result of this permit renewal. Any new surface disturbance would be limited to ventilation
or exploratory drilling.
2. Since these mines are underground and the surface facilities have been developed,
minimal surface disturbance is planned for the elk habitats mentioned. As a result, mining
impacts on elk populations or their habitats are anticipated to be minimal. The Permit
Document has been updated to reflect the current elk habitats within the permit area.
