STATE OF COLORADO •
Roy Romer, Governor
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
Dlr/ISION OF WILDLIFE
AN EQUAL OPPORNNIN EMPLOYER
John W. Mumma, Director
6060 Broatlway
Denver, Colorado 80218-1000
Telephone: (303)297-1192
• REFER 70
GO~~O
~'OF`~`"
For IYildlife-
For People
wildlife will benefit from the plantings, including pheasants, bobwhite quail, and many passerines.
As detailed in the reclamation plan, pond design and sloping appears to address the requirements
of several species, as well as safety issues . The CDOW suggests some ofthe lazger ponds could
be constructed with a nesting island for piping plovers and least terns. These species aze listed as
federally threatened and endangered, respectively, and require nesting habitats composed of
sandy, pebbly material free of vegetation. If this idea is incorporated into the reclamation plan,
these species may successfully nest at the site, which would assist with least tern and piping plover
recovery efforts. Additionatty, trees such as cottonwoods, ponderosa pines, and other trees [hat
potentially will act as raptor perch sites, could be oriented away from the ponds, to minimi~.e
waterfowl predation by raptors.
The CDOW appreciates the opportunity to give input regarding this mining operation. As previously
stated, the Division sees tremendous wildlife potential associated with this project, and is encouraged by
the wildlife interest held by the applicants. If you have questions, or if I can assist with other matters,
please call me at 719-336-4852.
Sincerely,
~~~-
Ed T. Gorman
Habitat Biologist
cc.
