LOng
Division Direcor
RE: Red Cany Mine Sub ' once Structure Examinations,
Geotech ations (Permit No: C-S1-034)
In response to your' request, 1 accompanied you on an examination of the Hudson and Truitt
residences. and a Mobile home owned by the Tmitts on Wednesday, March l7, 1999. At your
request I had previously reviewed and corrunented on and inspection report. and photographs
completed by you.
The Hudson House
Our examination of the Hudson residence discerned minor s[nlchrral distress, including hairline
dryµ:111 cracks, foundation wall cracking with evidence of •.vater invasion, and foundation floor
slab cracking. Each of these phenomena are common in structures. Non of the distress appeared
severe ire terms of structural competence. Being a home owner, however, I understand that these
"minor" features can be disturbing [o a home owner.
Examination of the exterior of the structure discerned minor deflection of the northem, up slope
wall of the suticture at hvo points, approximately 22 and 32 feet west of the northwest corner.
The deflections corresponded to hairline to 1/16" wide foundation cracks observed inside the
walk-out basement level half wall. The backfill adjacent to the foundation appeared to be damp
in these areas. This northern wall is in the winter shadow of the structure. This winter has been
a light snowfall year. Examination inside determined that the community potable water
distribution system water service pipeline enters through the foundation in the immediate vicinity
if the 32 foot crack and damp area.
The suzrcture is founded on colluvial soils of the Williams Fork formation, with entrained erratic
basaltic boulders weathered from the cap rock of nearby Grand Mesa. The predominantly clay to
silt soils evidence "pop-corning", indicative of swell-shrinkage potential. Mr. Hudson reported
that agravel-filled trench drain was installed up gradient approximately 20 feet from, and parallel
to, the foundation wall. The structure was founded on a planar bench excavated into the gentle
cross sloping lot. The foundation appears to have been placed on a concrete slab-on-grade. No
foundational wall exists on the down grade walk-out basement horizon. The slab-on-grade is
