- ~~
~ ~
I. NEED FOR THE PROPOSED ACTION
San Miguel County has submitted a Free Use Application and
Permit for 80,000 cubic yards of gravel for use in resurfacing
county roads in the area. The site of the proposal is
described as:
New Mexico Principal Meridian
T. 43 N., R. 16 W.
Section 9: NVn/.SW'/a, FIihSW'/.NE'/.SW's
San Miguel County, Colorado
Containing 45 acres more or less
II. PROPOSED ACTION AND ALTERNATIVES
A. Proposed Action
The proposed action is to issue a Free Use Permit to San
Miguel County for 80,000 cubic yards of gravel which will
be used to surface county roads in the general western
portion of San Miguel County. The gravel pit operation
would be within the above described land and would only
involve approximately 15 acres of the permit area (see
mapl. Operations would involve expansion of the existing
Klondike gravel pit along the ridge to the southeast.
This is the preferred alternative.
B. No Action
This alternative would involve non approval of the Free
Use Permit. San Miguel County would then not be entitled
to remove the 80,000 cubic yards of gravel.
III. ENVIRONMENTAL II+IPACTS
A. Proposed Action
Critical Elements
a. AIR QUALITY
Some impacts to air quality will occur as.a
result of heavy equipment use in moving and
distributing surface soil and gravel material.
If any of the material is processed (crushed
or screened), dusty conditions will result
from that process. Since the area is somewhat
remote and almost always has some wind
throughout the periods of operation, no major
air quality impacts are anticipated.
