Grazing Plan
The pasture can be managed a couple of different ways. The
company can place 86 AU's in the pasture for one month or they can
place 43 AUs in the pasture for two months or varying combinations
of AU and time not to exceed a total of 88 AUMs for the growing
season. It's recommended that the following combination of time
and grazing be adopted by Kerr Coal.
1. Place the maximum number of animal units in the pasture for the
shortest paractical time i.e. place all 88 Au's in the pasture
for one month and then remove them until next year's grazing
season. The reclaimed site grasses are beginning to show
decline in some areas due to years of no grazing. Grasses need
to be periodically grazed or mowed to maintain their vigor.
By placing the maximum number of AU's you will force the
livestock to better utilize the perimeter of the pasture as
well as break up the the old existing organic matter. This
should eventually lead to healthier grass on the reclaimed
sites.
2. Total dry matter production by grasses is highly correlated to
annual precipitation. Carrying capacity should be visually
monitored each year and adjusted accordingly.
References Reviewed
1.
