<br />Oxbow Carbon & Minerals, Inc. (Oxbow), P.O. Box 535, Somerset, Colorado 81434, has filed
<br />an application for a Technical Revision to the approved mining and reclamation plans for the
<br />Somerset and Sanborn Creek Mines. The approved Colorado Division of Minerals and
<br />Geology (DMG) permit, Permit No. C-81-022, provides for underground coal mining and
<br />related surface operations and activities and reclamation of mining-related disturbance. The
<br />proposed revision incorporates a recently completed report evaluating potential subsidence
<br />effects due to longwall mining, into the permit document.
<br />Areas to be affected by the proposed longwall mining activities are located in Gunnison
<br />County immediately north of the Town of Somerset and State Highway 133 on the North
<br />Fork of the Gunnison River. These areas are covered by the U.S. Geological Survey 7.5
<br />minute Somerset and Bowie quadrangle maps. Some of the proposed activities will occur
<br />within 100 feet of State Highway 133, however, these activities will be within existing mine
<br />disturbance areas which have been previously addressed under applicable public notice and
<br />hearing requirements. All existing and proposed activities will occur within the mine permit
<br />area defined as follows:
