Studv Objectives
This survey was undertaken to identify and record all cultural resowces within the area
of probable impact of the project locale. An assessment of their significance and
eligibiiity follows the guidelines and requirements of the National Register of Historic
Places (NRIiP). Anticipated cultural resowces encountered during survey would likely
be small surface lithic scatters or historic materials.
Field Methodology
This project was surveyed by a single archaeologist and two volunteers with previous
survey experience. Survey transects were random meandering spaced at 25 m intervals
and all transects were flagged. A cazeful inspection of all exposed subsurface prospect
excavations were examined and a 10 m boundary beyond the project area was included to
inswe impacts from quarrying activities would not destroy any cultural materials outside
the proposed gravel pit. Ground visibility was good, often 75 to 80 % visibility;
however, vegetation sometimes limited it to 60 %. The access road was surveyed with a
zigzag transect and included an azea 10 m wider than indicated.
Results and Recommendations
No evidence of prehistoric or historic cultural materials was identified in the project area.
In addition, no cultwal materials associated with the historic Santa Fe Trail were found
during the survey. Since no cultwal materials were encountered on this survey, it is
recommended that the gravel pit construction be given full azchaeological clearance for
the property to be used by Carder Incorporated/Verhoeff Pit Project, Permit No. M-92-
113.
6
