•
Introduction
At the request of Carder, Inc. and the Historical Preservation Office, State of Colorado, a
cultural resource inventory survey was carved out on the site of the proposed Verhoeff
Pit phase 2, permit No. M-92-113. The survey location lies approximately 2.5 miles
southeast of Hasty in Bent County Colorado. This work was performed to meet the
following requirements of Executive Order II593, the National Environmental Policy
Act of 1969, and other Federal Laws and regulations for the protection of both historic
and prehistoric cultural resources. A file search was made at the Colorado Historical
Society, Office of Archaeology & Historic Preservation, 1300 Broadway, Denver,
Colorado 80203, showing no previously recorded cultural resources within a one mile
radius of the project azea. Field inspection was performed on December 25, of
approximately 30 acres, as well as the existing access road. No cultural resources were
found, and full cleazance of the above mentioned location is recommended.
Location of Survey Locale
Access to the Project area is as follows. From Hasty, Colorado proceed east on Interstate
50 approximately 2.25 miles to Road 26.5. Turn south onto Road 26,5 and proceed
approximately 0.9 miles to Road JJ. Turn west and follow the road running east/west,
for approximately 0.7 miles to a private road. Turns south onto the private road across a
cattle-guard and continue 0.4 miles to the existing gravel pit (as shown in figure 1). The
survey location is east of the existing gravel pit and is staked with metal posts.
Environmental Setting
Geography/Geology
Bent County contains a diversity of soil formations. Included in these is the Harvey-
Stoneham-Cascajo Association. This association is a deep, gently sloping, well-drained
loams that are moderately steep on the uplands. The uplands contain well-drained gravel
rich soils (See Figure 2), 0 to 3 % slopes. The surface layer is a can sometimes include
deposits of Otero sandy loam and other redeposition of soils in this portion of the county
(Preator, Moreland, Woodyazd, and McCullough: 1971).
Physiology/Hydrology
The site is located on approximately 2.5 miles southeast of Hasty, Colorado. Bent
County lies entirely within the physiographic province of the Great Plains. The area is
drained by the Arkansas River and Caddoa Creek. Numerous small canals have been
built in the area for irrigation (See Figure 1). Elevation on site ranges between 3,850 and
3,860 feet above sea level.
