Golder Associates Inc. (Golder) has prepazed this letter to address the recent failing gradation
for Leak Detection Fill (LDF) in the Phase IVb Area. The gradation test in question was
conducted by Golder on August 22, 2002 for LDF used to backfill the Phase IVb LDT. The
results of the gradation tests are attached to this letter. As shown, the LDF gradation is within
the Golder specifications for this material, with the exception of the 3/8-inch sieve. The
Golder LDF specification at the 3/8-inch sieve is 40 to 70 percent passing. The results from
the gradation test show that the percent passing the 3/8-inch sieve is 23 percent.
Approximately 200 feet (the length of the LDT beneath the west PSSA end berm) of LDT
was constructed with this LDF.
The results from the LDF gradation indicate the placed material is coazser than the project
specification. An LDF material that is coarser than the specification will not impact the
performance of the LDT. Therefore, Golder will accept the LDF placed in the LDT beneath
the west PSSA end berm.
