The Division of Minerals and Geology hereby issues notice, in accordance with Title 34, Article 33, Section 116,
Paragraph 4, of the Colorado Revised Statutes, that on May 29, 2001, an application to revise coal mining
operations at the Bowie No. 2 Mine was considered complete for the purposes of filing. The revision was
submitted by Bowie Resources Limited. All review and comment periods as provided in the Act and the
Regulations initiate from this date of filing.
Approval of this permit revision would increase the permit boundary [o the west by 560 acres and allow for
longwall mining west of the present mining, and west of the main fault, but just east of Terror Creek.
Additionally, it is being proposed that one gob vent borehole and its associated light use road would be
constructed. Al] 560 proposed additional acres are on Federal ]and and, with this approval, would bring the
remainder of the Iron Point Tract Federal Coa] Lease into the Bowie No. 2 permit. A portion of the proposed
mining had previously been approved as retreat mining of a room and pillaz operation.
The Underground coal mining operation is on land located approximately 5 miles Northeast of Paonia, Colorado.
The permit area is further described as follows:
Portions of Sections Z, 3, 4, 9, I0, 11, 14, I5, and 16, Township I3 South, Range 91 West of the 6th P.M.
Portions of Sections 33 and 34, Township 12 South, Range 91 West of the 6th P.M.
The above-mentioned tracts of land are shown on USGS 7.5 minute Quadrangle map of Bowie.
Because the above-referenced penTtit revision application would incorporate additional lands into the permit area
or might otherwise alter previously approved permit conditions or mitigation measures, we are requesting your
agency's evaluation of the potential for impacts to cultural and historic resources.
In accordance with the May 1991 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between our agencies, we must have
your concurrence in order to approve this proposal. We are required to make a finding that "the proposed
operations will not adversely affect any publicly owned park or place listed on or those places eligible for listing,
as determined by the SHPO, on the National Register of Historic Places, unless approved jointly by [he Board and
the Federal, State, or local agency with jurisdiction over the park or place." Therefore, we request that you submit
