I visited the mine on
Wednesday, July 29`", 2003. It has been nine years since I last estimated the available dry
matter, and while not scientific, it is my opinion that the reclaimed area has improved in
both plant diversity and plant health.
I estimate the reclaimed lands to have, on average, 700 pounds of usable dry matter per acre,
and the native areas to have 250 pounds of usable dry matter for gazing. I recommend fifty
percent utilization by livestock. Given that there are approximately 350 acres of reclaimed
land and 150 acres of native vegetation, this translates into approximately 188 AUMS.
I strongly recommend that the site be grazed in the shortest time period as possible with the
maximum number of available animal units, i.e. 188 cows for a month, or 376 cows for 14
days.
ft0 U7"f
CDUHN" Colorado State University, US Department ojAgricufture and Routt County
AfiNI-C Cooperative Extension programs are available to a!I without discrimination.
u
L
T
U
R
E
Putting tinnnledge to 11'ork
