• • iii iiiiiiiiuiiiiii
TR9PPER DINING INC. 999
June 27, 1986
CERTIFIED P176279485
Mr. Mike Long
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division
423 Centennial Building
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, CO 80203
Dear Mike: ~' / I
`~
_ - ,.
JAN 'i ~ i5~6

SUBJECT: Minor Revision MR-39, File No. C-010-81, Request to Leave Unsalvage-
able Topsoil in Ashmore Pit.
During your inspection of Trapper Mine on 6/25/86, we discussed not stripping
topsoil frets portions of the Ashmore Pit area. Per your request, we are sub-
mitting a minor revision requesting permission [o leave [his topsoil due to
safety considerations and the quality of topsoil.
The enclosed map outlines the approximate area of topsoil to be left and the
soil type. As can be seen from the map, and also your field inspection, this
area consists of extremely rocky, shallow soils with outcrops of sandstone
interspersed with erosion channels. Additionally, the area is extremely
steep, presenting a safety hazard to equipment attempting to strip topsoil.
As outlined in Section 4.9.1 of our permit, when these conditions are encoun-
tered, topsoil will not be salvaged. "
The area proposed for exclusion from stripping of topsoil totals approximately
21 acres. This area accounts for Less than 22 of the total topsoil [o be
stripped in Ashmore Pi[ in 1986 (Attachment 1). Field surveys show [hat
approximately 4,130 cubic yards of low quality topsoil will be lost from the
area. Thia equates to an overall depth of only 1.44 inches across the 21-acre
area. This amount will cover only three acres of rangeland at [he permitted
replace~sent depth of ten inches. The area south and west of the proposed
exclusion area has topsoil resources which are more than adequate to offset
[his topsoil loss.
As we discussed, this exclusion area is a buffer zone at the end of the pit.
It is probable [hat most of this area will not be disturbed. However, if
reclamation of these acres is required, sufficient inventory exists in stock-
piles adjacent to the site and in the current year's stripping in Ashmore Pit.
Our survey calculations show that an excess of 30,000 yards will be hauled
from the area just south and west of [he proposed exclusion area. This is
sufficient yardage [o reclaim the proposed exclusion area at an average depth
of [en inches.
cont.
P.O. Box 187 Craig, Colorado 81626 (303) 824-4401
