E.
Division Engineer
RE: Joker Mine, Water District 54
Water Division VI, Moffat County
Your earlier E-mail indicated that the Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety was considering
warranty release for the Joker Mine in the Little Snake River basin. As part of that work, you requested
information from the Division of Water Resources on the status of the Minerals Mining Pond #1 and
Pond #2 located along Housel Gulch, tributary to West Timberlake Creek. The following information is
from our files and from a site visit by the Water Commissioner for that District.
Minerals Mining Corporation obtained storage rights for Pond #1 and Pond #2 in January 1976 via
water court cases W-881-75 and W-882-75, respectively. The approved uses were for stock water,
mining, and industrial. Pond #1 was listed as 3.96 acre-feet in capacity from a dam with a length of 130
feet and a maximum height of 10 feet. Pond #2 was listed as 3.82 acre feet in capacity from a dam
with a length of 125 feet and a maximum height of 10 feet. The site visit determined that the dam for
the downstream Pond #2 had been removed and that the dam for the upstream Pond #1 appeared to
meet the description listed in the water court records. The remote area around Pond #1 would make
that dam a low hazard or no public hazard structure.
Based on these findings, the existing dam for Pond #1 would be a "non-jurisdictional" structure per our
Rules and Regulations. As such, this Division has no objection to the release of this reclaimed site. As
is typical for non-jurisdictional dams, we will not make routine safety inspections of this dam and the
structure will not be listed in our dam data base. The only time that this Division might visit this dam in
the future would be for possible water administration issues in the area or as a follow-up if a safety
complaint is filed by someone.
If you should have any further questions about this matter, please feel free to contact me at (970) 879-
0272, ext. 6014 or atj.blair@state.co.us.
Sincerely,
~~ -
John R.
