Townsend Ave.
Montrose, CO 81401
Re: South D-ao Gravel Pit MLR Permit Expansion
Dear Shawna:
Thanks for showing me the boundary extensions for the South D-ao
Pit located southwest of Montrose. I offer the following
comments for consideration in developing the final reclamation
plan.
The site is located on an alluvial bench above the M & D canal.
The area has historically been used for agricultural purposes,
including grazing and hay production in some areas.
The area has historically been a valuable wildlife area because
of the juxtaposition with farm lands, riparian areas, canals and
diversity of vegetative and topographical features. It has been
a very good winter range area for mule deer. Upland bird
species, numerous mammals, songbirds and raptors utilize the
area.
The area on the east side along the hillside of the pit is
currently the highest value area for wildlife. This area is
currently vegetated with sagebrush, sumac, rabbitbrush,
cottonwoods and other valuable vegetative species for wildlife.
It offers outstanding habitat for numerous species, including
gambel quail, pheasants, cottontails, chipmunks, rock squirrels,
mule deer and raptors, including bald eagles (winter) and golden
eagles.
The Division recommends the hillside area be reclaimed
emphasizing native species currently on site, with a greater
emphasis on planting cottonwoods, sumac and sagebrush to provide
a greater diversity of vertical habitat for wildlife. Grass and
forb species such as white and yellow sweetclover, ladac alfalfa,
wildrye, small burnet, pubescent and crescent wheatgrass are
recommended for the intermixing with the trees and shrubs
throughout the remainder of the site.
a:PARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, James S.
