SIMPLE MASS BALANCE TO QUANTIFY THE AMOUNT OF NITRATE
NITROGEN IN THE PAD 3 MATERIAL
Arithmetic Mean or "Average" concentration of nitrate nitrogen equals the sum of the
values for nitrate nitrogen analysis for the sixteen D.I. extraction tests divided by the
number of tests (16):
280.82 ppm/16 tests = 17.55125 mg/I (equivalent to ppm)
Estimated density of compacted Pad 3 material is 120 Ibs/ft3 which equates to a
bulk density of 1.925. For comparative purposes the density of ore placed on the
leach pads is typically assumed to be 100 Ibslft3.
Weight of compacted Pad 3 material one foot thick over one acre:
surface area of one acre = 43,560 ft2/ac
depth of one foot of Pad 3 material = 1 ft
estimated weight of one cubic foot of compacted Pad 3 material = 120 Ibs
43,560 ft2/ac X 1 ft = 43,560 ft3/ac
43,560 ft3/ac X 120 Ibs/ft3 = 5,227,200 Ibs
Since nitrate is readily dissolved in water and a byproduct of the breakdown of cyanide
and subsequent nitrification process it can be assumed that the nitrate has fully
dissolved in the D.I. water during this test as it is not a byproduct of the rock itself.
Ratio of D.I. water to Pad 3 material:
20 Ibs D.I.: 30 Ibs Pad 3 material = 2:3
Equivalent weight of D.I. extract to 43,560 ft3 of compacted Pad 3 material:
5,227,200 Ibs/ac X 2/3 = 3,484,800 Ibs/ac
or 3.4848 MM Ibs/ac
Weight of nitrate nitrogen in one acre of compacted Pad 3 material spread to an
average depth of one foot:
3.4848 MM Ibs/ac X 17.55125 ppm nitrate nitrogen
= 61 Ibs nitrate nitrogen per acre
Scott C.
