The Division of Minerals and Geology hereby issues notice, in accordance with Title 34, Article 33,
Section 118, Paragraph 3, of the Colorado Revised Statutes, that on May 19, 2006, an application to renew
an existing permit to conduct coal mining operations at the Edna Strip Mine was considered complete for
the purposes of filing. All review and comment periods as provided in the Colorado Surface Mining
Reclamation Act and the Rules initiate from this date of filing.
The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. proposes to continue Surface coal mining and/or reclamation
operations on land located approximately 5 miles Northwest of Oak Creek, Colorado. The permit area is
further described as follows:
TEN, R85 W, Portions of Sections 31, 32
TEN, R86W, Portions of Section 36
T4N, R86W, Portions of Sections 12, 13, 14, 23, 24, 25
T4N, R85 W, Portions of Sections 7, 8, 17, 18, 19, 29, 30
The above-mentioned tracts of land are shown on USGS 7.5 minute Quadrangle map of Cow Creek, and
Rattlesnake Butte.
This application is for renewal of a valid existing permit. The permit is in permanent cessation. The renewal
is for continued reclamation activities in accordance with apreviously-approved reclamation plan, and
provides for no new disturbance to undisturbed or reclaimed lands.
However, we are requesting your agency's evaluation of the proposal. Your comments and concerns
relating to the adequacy of fish and wildlife resources information, the fish and wildlife plan, and the
reclamation plan as it relates to fish and wildlife considerations, including potential impacts to threatened or
endangered species, are requested. If wildlife habitat is the proposed postmining land use, we request your
evaluation of proposed woody plant stocking levels, planting arrangements, and methods for mitigation of
potential adverse impacts.
