Further, we believe the native seed mixes, as proposed, will be beneficial to local
wildlife know to inhabit the local area and consider the proposal to vary the reclamation seed mix based
on changes in soils and geomorphology exemplary. We would offer one recommendation for the
applicant's consideration, however. Scaled Quail are known to occur in this area of Fremont County and
although the proposed seed mix will provide potential forage value, vegetative cover is also a limiting
factor for this species. We would recommend, for your consideration, planting or transplanting of rabbit
brush, four-winged saltbush, mountain mahogany, or cholla cactus and yucca. These species all provide
valuable cover and nesting habitat for scaled quail and would further enhance the site for this and other
wildlife species.
The Division appreciates the opportunity to provide input on this proposed conversion application.
Please feel free to call me at (719)227-5227 should you have any questions or require additional
information.
David
Habitat
Cc: Dean Riggs, DWM
iiiiiiiiiiiu tii
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Greg Welcher, Execufive Director
WILDLIFE COMMISSION, Bernard L.
