Technical Revision No.105
Refuse Pile Expansion, Ventilation Shafts
September 27, 2005
Page 2
• Installation of a 4-inch continuously-cored hole at each of the proposed RPE Shaft centers
from pad surface to below the B Seam floor; and
• Drilling of 3 or more, 3" or 4" diameter, open-augured holes surrounding each of the
proposed RPE Shafts to weathered bedrock depth.
The engineering data gathered from the 4-inch continuous core will assist in the design of RPE
Shafts by providing information on the surface soils, bedrock, coal profiles, and the increment
below the_B Seam floor that_will.be encountered during shaft-raising -This hole. will also. be packer.. ___ _ _ _ _ ._
tested to ascertain the existence and extent of aquifers that the shaft construction may encounter. If
needed to protect aquifers, these shafts may be grouted to form a grout curtain wall.
The 3" or 4" diameter, open-augured holes (three or more in number) in the surface soil to
weathered bedrock increment will provide soils engineering data (e.g., bearing strength) and neaz-
surface hydrologic chazacteristics information.
Mountain Coal Company anticipates that it may initiate these subsurface investigation and
characterization activities in 2005 to accommodate design and planning time requirements.
We appreciate your consideration and careful review of this submittal and, as always, would be
happy to work with you to address any questions or concerns that arise during the review process.
Sincerely,
1~t~
enry A. azbe
Environmental Engineer
cc: Pete Wyckoff
Phil Schmidt
Mike Peacock
