<br /> <br />material, about ] 0 inches thick, is strongly calcazeous, grayish-brown light clay loam <br />that is mottled. Underlying this to a depth of 60 inches or more is mottled, light <br />brownish-gray gravely sand. In the surface layer and underlying material soil reaction <br />is moderately alkaline and in the substratum it is mildly alkaline. In most azeas <br />gypsum crystals and sofr lime segregations aze present in some layers. <br />Loveland soils have moderate permeability. Available water capacity for the <br />profile is moderate to high, depending upon the depth to very gravely sand. Roots <br />can penetrate to a depth of 60 inches or more, and the seasonal high water table is at a <br />depth of 2 to 4 feet. <br />These soils are used for pastwe and crops. In some azeas they are a source of <br />gravel for construction. <br />Representative profile of Loveland clay loam, 0 to I percent slopes, in an area of <br />Loveland soils located 70 feet east and 2,310 feet south of the northwest comer of <br />sec. 11, T. 2 N., R. 69 W.: <br />A11-~ to 11 inches, dark grayish-brown (1 OYR 4/2) light clay loam, very <br />dazk brown (1 OYR 2/2) when moist; moderate, fine and medium, <br />granulaz structure; soft, very friable; calcazeous; moderately <br />alkaline; cleaz, smooth boundary. <br />A12-11 to 20 inches, dazk grayish-brown (lOYR 4/2) light clay loam <br />with common, medium, distinct yellowish-brown (1 OYR 5/4) <br />mottles, very dazk brown (1 OYR 2/2) when moist; weak, medium, <br />subangulaz blocky structure; hard, firm; calcazeous; moderately <br />alkaline; abrupt, smooth boundary. <br />Clesca-20 to 30 inches, grayish-brown (lOYR 5/2) light clay loam with <br />common, medium, distinct, yellowish-brown (lOYR 5/4 and 6/6) <br />mottles, dazk grayish-grown (]OYR 4/2) when moist; massive; <br />hard, friable; strongly calcareous; few to common, fine to medium <br />clusters of gypsum crystals, and common, medium and coarse, soft <br />white lime segregations; moderately alkaline; clear, wavy boundary. <br />IIC2-30 to 60 inches, light brownish-gray (1 OYR 6/2) very gravely sand <br />with many, medium, distinct, stroXXX (lOYR 5/2) when moist; <br />single grained; loose when dry and moist; mildly alkaline. <br />The A horizon ranges from 18 to 23 inches in thickness and <br />from sandy clay loam to clay loam in texture.
