Each
of these types is suitable substrate for a particular set of grasses, fortis, shrubs. and
trees. The accompanying map of the site with delineation by soil type shows that
"Niwot" is the most widespread soil series at the site. "Loveland" series is also
abundant, with smaller patches of "Laporte," "Manuel," "McClave," and "Terrace
escarpment."
The presence of these differing types of soils indicates that the area can
potentially support a vazied landscape of different plant communities. Historically,
the area probably did produce a mosaic of plant community types across this
landscape. In this century, farmers and ranchers have taken advantage of the loamy
and mesic soils for raising crops and feeding cattle, subsequently taming the area into
amore uniform landscape with regazd to plant communities.
Laporte Series
The Laporte series is made up of shallow, well-drained soils. These soils formed
on upland ridges in loamy residuum derived from limestone and limy shale. Slopes are
5 to 20 percent. Elevations aze 5,200 to 5,800. The native vegetation is mainly short
and mid grasses. Annual precipitation is 12 to 18 inches. Mean annual air
temperature is 48° to 52° F., and the frost-free season is about 140 to 155 days.
In a representative profile, the surface layer is strongly calcareous, grayish-brown
very fine sandy loam about 8 inches thick. The underlying material is strongly
carious, pale-brown loam, about 5 inches thick, that overlies limestone. Soil reaction
is moderately alkaline.
Laporte soils have moderate permeability. Available water capacity for the
profile is low. Roots can penetrate to a depth of between ] 0 to 20 inches.
These soils are used mainly for pasture or range, in some azeas the underlying
limestone is used for manufacture of cement.
Representative profile of Laporte very fine sand loam is 5 to 20 percent slopes,
located 1,820 feet west and 1,3XX feet north of the southeast comer of sec. 16, T.3
N., XX 70 W.:
A1-0 to 8 inches, grayish-brown (lOYR 5/2) very fine sand loam, very
Western Mobile Lyons - Rockin' WP
