The
southeast portion ofSection 3 has not been previously surveyed, but the north half ofthis section
and most of the adjoining Section 2 was been previous surveyed as Transect l0A dwing the
1978 survey of selected pazcels for the West Central Coal azcheological inventory (see T3ibbets
et al. 1979). As you have indicated to me, this transect identified one historic sheep camp
(SGN1562) that lies outside the proposed new road within Section 3 but near two new proposed
drill locations, which occur in the previously surveyed portion of Section 2. That site has not
been recently observed by Oxbow personnel, but T have recommended that they avoid i[ if it is
encountered near or within their project area.
Based on the very low site density of the surrounding areas, my review of the maps, and
my personal knowledge of the area, T believe that the steep slopes and heavy vegetation
associated with the new road section preclude Ending any significant cultural resowces.
Accordingly, it is recommended that an intensive cultural resources inventory ofthe project azea
be waved and clearance be granted. If you would like additional documentation or require an
nn-site visit after the ground surface has been cleared by Oxbow, please call me. Thank you for
your attention t0 this matter.
Si/n~cerel/y,
Cam/ ( ~.'~lrv~„t~f
Cazl Conner
Director
Archaeology ~ Paleontology ~ History ~ Environmental Studies
