Need for Bermed Areas in Front of the Portals:
I mentioned to Larry that we need to be careful about directing
drainage into the portals, although we realize that very little
water is involved in this case. We were wondering if berms were
really necessary for the areas in front of the portals.
Larry replied that the only activity going on in front of the
portals involved turning around on the road and that a berm or
raised area could probably be put in place at the entrance to the
portals to keep any additional drainage from entering the portals.
If necessary, Larry said, the turn around areas could be heavily
graveled so as to reduce any runoff to zero. He also said that he
was willing to change the wording on the SAE pages to leave out
references to water being directed to the portals.
Larry Routten said that he thought that any turn around areas could
probably be considered as part of the road and might not need to be
treated as SAE's, though the gravel might be a good idea.
Diverted Middle Channel as a Permanent Feature:
I asked Larry why they were proposing to make the diversion
permanent. He replied that they were flexible on this but that
they thought it might be a good idea to keep the stream away from
future reclamation.
Modeling of Culverts Based Upon a 100 Year Event:
I told Larry that it was our understanding that the regulations
required that he model the road culverts based upon only a l0 year
event. He said that he agreed but that he wanted to be sure that
all flows were transported away from the portals.
Outlet for Diverted Middle Channel:
Larry told me that the outlet was armored in that it passed over
exposed bedrock.
Larry Routten said that we need to verify this in the field and
also verify the path the water would take at high flows to get back
into the main channel.
Proximitv of North Channel to the North Portal:
Larry said that they intended to construct an embankment between
the channel and the portal where needed to insure that the water
from the north channel would not reach the North Portal.
we should make sure this commitment is made a part of the permit so
that it will be monitored in the future.
cc: Larry Routten
