Table 1 B. CeFnirion of Natural Herica;e State Rarity Ranks
These ranks should not be interpreted as legal desi;nadons.
State rank (S): Based on the status of a species in an individual sore. 5 ranks may differ among states based
on the relative abundance of a species in each state. Species or plan[ communities that rank 51 to 53 are
considered imperiled or vulnerable and the status and Iocavcns of each are cicsely monitored. Species or
plant communities [ha[ are ranked 54 or 55 are no[ actively monitored, except that the Iocaticrs of the best
examples of all plan[ communities are monitored. The sous of all e!emena is reviewed annually.
S1 Critically imperiled in state because of extreme rarity (S or fewer occurrences, or
very few remaining individuals), or because of some factor of its biology making it especially
vulnerable to extirpation from the state.
S2 Imperiled in state because of rariy (6 to 20 occur, ences), or because of ocher
factors demonsvably making it very vulnerable to extin, ation from the state.
S3 Vulnerable in sore (2i to i00 occurrences).
5354 Watchlisted. Specific occurrence data are collected and periodically
analyzed co determine whedter more active tracking is warranted. Watchlisted species are
indicated in this document with ""'.
S4 Apparently secure in the state. On{y high quality examples of native plant
communities of this ranking are actively tracked.
S5 Demcnstrably secure in the state. Only high quality examples of native plan[
communities of this ranking are actively [racked.
SIB Refers to the breeding season imperilment of elements that are not permanent
residents.
SAN Refers co the non-breeding season imperilment of elements that are not permanent
residents. Where no consistent location can be discerned for migrants or non-breeding
populations, a rank o(SZN is used.
SZ Migrant whose occurrences are too irregular, transitory, and/or dispersed to be
reliably identified, mapped, and protected.
SH Historically known from the state, but not verified for an ex[ended period, usually
> 15 years; this rank is used primarily when inven[ory has been attempted recently.
SX Presumed extirpated from the sore.
_. S~? Indicates uncertainty about an assigned sore rank.
SU :. .Unable eo assiprs rarity rank, often because of low search effort or cryptic nature of
the element.
SA Accidenol in the state.
SR Reposed co occur in the sore, but unverified.
S? Unranked. Some evidence that species may be imperiled, but awaiting formal rarity
ranking.
