Please respond
to this letter at your earliest convenience so that we may present the
technical revision for approval at the March 25-26, 1987 meeting of the
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board.
r/ 1. Please provide a specific schedule for Coherex application. We realize
that this must involve some flexibility based on surface moisture conditions,
but it is probably feasible to specify a minimum number of applications.
Please relate the time schedule to specific areas of the tailings facilities
and include specific chemical application quantities. Such an approximate
schedule should be feasible based upon previous operation experience and based
upon your knowledge of snowmelt and water management patterns at the site.
In accordance with previous discussions, we recommend that the schedule
incorporate a minimum of two applications (per year) to the dry areas of the
tailings facilities.
~ 2. It is our understanding that the tailings dams and pond surfaces will
be monitored by mine personnel to ensure that dust production is kept to a
minimum, and that significant dust is not transported off-site. Is this
correct?
/3. We recommend that the operator maintain records of all monitoring and
dust suppression activities. Please comment.
/4, It is our understanding that previous applications of Coherex to the
dam face areas has caused increased water erosion on the dams. The present
proposal includes a plan to apply Coherex to the dam crests and to a distance
downslope.
Will there be a problem with surface erosion as a result of the spraying? It
seems possible that the benefits derived from chemical application may offset
any negative implications associated with minor erasion. Please discuss this
issue in detail.
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel. (303) 566-3567
