2005 -4- <br />3.0 TEST APPARATUS <br />053-2386 <br />In order to achieve the high testing loads, the apparatus used for this test program consisted of a <br />12-inch inside diameter aluminum load cell. The testing cell assembly is shown in Figure 1. The cell <br />is attached to the base plate with clamps. Tie-down rods anchored to the cell base plate extend <br />upward allowing the reaction force to be applied to the sample through the top plate. A porous <br />loading plate is placed in contact with the upper drainage material and a hydraulic jack is used to <br />apply force to the sample. A digital pressure transducer is used to monitor the applied load and dial <br />gauges measured deformation of the sample.
