In addition to soils, water availability may influence the distribution
and density of vegetation within this type. Most of the permit area is
located on very steep terrain and is shaded, even during the summer
months, for significant portions of the day. This may decrease
potential evaporation, providing relatively higher moisture
availability in certain locations, including allowing slow melting of
snow in the winter and spring. This many account for the pronounced
microgeographic variation in vegetation density observed on the site
and the high density of mountain mahogany and gambel oak in some
locations.
No consistent variations within this vegetation community were
observed which appeared to correlate with slope, aspect or elevation.
Past management does not appear to have affected this vegetation
community, at least for many years. No evidence of livestock
grazing or timber harvesting was observed on the site.
4. Field Data
Field data sheets for cover and production are attached.
