Long
~ ~ Division Diieclor
Technical Rev. 11
Stab~il~t~ Monitoring Cessation
(Permit #C-81-047)
I reviewed the technical revision application referenced above
submitted on behalf of the Blue Ribbon mine by James Stover, P.E.,
consultant to the operator. As a portion of this technical
revision Mr. Stover requests approval to cease periodic monitoring
of the slope stability monuments installed on the Blue Ribbon
reclaimed mine portal bench.
As supporting rationale for his request, Mr. Stover observes that
the slope stability monuments have not been effected by the past
three episodes of instability evidenced at the bench. It is true
that the monuments have not been effected by these three surficial
slides. Each landslide was a relatively small failure which
effected on a middle portion of the facial slope of the bench.
These slides were also limited to relatively shallow failures of
the topsoil and shallow waste comprising the bench. The slope
stability monuments, however, served to document that the overall
structure of the mine bench has remained stable. Under Mr.
Stover's proposal they will be retained and can again serve that
purpose in the future, if necessary.
I recommend your approval of the request for cessation of slope
stability monitoring of the Blue Ribbon portal bench monuments,
with the condition that they are retained for future resurvey, if
necessary.
cc: Dave Berry
Doc: M:\MIN\JAP\BLUESTAB.MON
JP/JP
