It formed in alluvium derived
~1
i
.~
dcmin3ntly fran sandstone arri shale. The native vegetation is mainly
grasses and shrubs. Elevation is 6,800 to 7,400 feet. The average annual
precipitation is 15 to 17 inches, the average annual air temperature is 4s
to 45 degrees F, and the average frost-free period is 90 to 110 days.
Typically, the surface layer is brown loam 4 inches thick. The
subsurface layer is dark brown clay loam 4 inches thick. The subsoil is
brown clay loam 14 inches thick. The next layer is a light brown clay Loam
26 inches thick. The next layer is a buried subsoil of brown clay loam 12
inches thi~ti. In sane areas the surface layer is silty clay loam.
Included in this unit are about 5 percent Skein soils and 5 percent
Gurley soils and 5 percent soils that are similar to these Callan sails but
have less than 35 p'arcent clay in the particle size control section. Also
included are small areas of HaplaquoLls, cool occurring in small
intermittent drainagesi
Permeability of this Callan soil is slow. Available water capacity is
high. Effective rooting depth is 60 inches or more. Ihinoff is mediian, and
the hazard of water erosion is slight co high.
This unit is used mainly for irrigated pasture, small grains, alfalfa,
and grass hay (fig. 6). It is also used for livestock grazing in spring and
fall and for wildlife habitat.
The potential plant community on this unit is mainly muttor~rass, Indian
ricegrass, western wheatgrass, and Wyaning big sagebxvsh.
