STATE OF COLORADO
Roy Romer, Governor
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAViD C. SHELTON, Director
DATE: June 8, 1987
T0: Dan Mathews
FROM: Cathy Begej ~~~
RE: LITTLE MIDDLE CREEK PERMIT REVIEW (N0. 1), ECKMAN PARK C-81-071,
SUPPLEMENTAL OVERSlJRDEN ANALYSES
Summary: Selected parameters (Ca, Mg Na, SAR, NHq, N03, Cd, Pb,
Ni, Acid-Base Potential, Sulfur Forms, Neutralization
Potential, pH & EC) were analyzed in two new holes in zones
15' above and 10' below the overburden. Sulfur forms from
the coal were submitted for six holes drilled in 1984.

Observations: These samples seemed less toxic than those examined
previously. No problems were noted with Cd, pH and NH4,
acid-base potential maximum values looked better, and pH was
a half unit (0: 5) more alkaline. -
There still exists a problem w/acid base potential and
nickel, with statistics lining up well with previous analyses \w '~~
n~'~""w. -~ (over 40% of samples show acid-base potential exceeding ,~,\~`~~`
~ ~ ~ 0~~- recommended overburden limitations and over 75% show nickel
SJ~Sr~~"_`~ y_-.. exceeding recommended overburden limitations). ~f
Recommendation: Since the top of the spoils will probably contain a large
portion of the roof material, I would note the possibility
for acidity problems and nickel toxicity in the Findings, but
ignore the problem unless revegetation becomes an issue. I
would concurrently recommend that no decrease in topsoil
depth requirements be approved.
Additional Quality Control Comments:
°I wonder if the location of two holes is reversed on Map 83, as the log
for 026-87-2 had a 2' parting and I thought the parting showed up in the
eastern part of the tract.
°I wonder if sulfate sulfur tests were run on coal samples. All analyses
equal zero, and I suspect no analysis was run. As sulfate sulfur is a
minor constituent, I will ask them about it, but won't press it.
/vj r
0261E
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.
