A hydrologic monitoring program was implemented at the
Chimney Rock Mine located 20 miles southwest of Pagosa Springs,
Colorado in October 1980. This program consists of three surface
stations and eight ground water wells. The results of monitoring
activities for January, February and March 1988 are summarized in
the following paragraphs with field data sheets attached.
Conditions at the site were generally under snowcover throughout
the quarter.
Surface Water Monitoring
Surface water monitoring was conducted at three locations on
Stollsteimer Creek (S-1, S-2 and S-3). Flows over the quarter
exhibited base flow conditions because of cold weather and
snowcover. Flow could not be measured during Janaury due to ice
conditions at S-1 and S-3. Spring runoff was experienced during
the March sampling.
Water quality samples were collected at each of the three
I surface stations during the March sampling. The water is
classified as a calcium/sulfate-bicarbonate water with relatively
low concentrations of metals and mineralization. The higher flow
conditions have somewhat shifted the major ion balance to a
sulfate rather than a bicarbonate situation. Results were similar
over the three stations.
1 A quarterly pond inspection was conducted in March. No
erosional or structural problems were observed, although, light
snowcover was present at the time of the inspection.
I
Ground Water Monitoring
I Alluvial ground water was monitored at wells A-1, W-1, W-5
and W-7. The deeper Fruitland Formation was monitored at wells
I W-6, W-9 and W-10. The reclaimed area was monitored at well W-
16.
Water levels monitored in the four alluvial wells exhibited a
I general increase over each of the three monthly samplings. This
corresponds with the increase in surface flow of Stollsteimer
Creek. Results of water samples collected in March at wells A-1,
W-5, and W-7 indicate similar characteristics as surface water.
