,
... -;

Gulch/Bateman Creek monitoring wells. The most recent samples were
indicated to have been taken in November 1996; the earliest samples
in March 1992. Some ground water quality data from drill holes, ie.
four of them, in Arequa Gulch were provided in Table 3 of Appendix
B.3 of Amendment 6.
In regard to the focus or direction of the technical revision to be
submitted by August 1, 1997, the Division would expect that in
support of its proposed numeric protection levels and Points of
Compliance for groundwater in the area of the mine, excluding
Arequa Gulch for the moment, CC&V would not only include all
groundwater quality and depth data for the Wilson Creek/Bateman
Creek drainage but also such data for the Squaw Gulch area and its
tributary drainages as well as the general Ironclad-Globe Hill area
of the mine, including the Moffat Tunnel. Although CC&V has wells
listed with the Office of the State Engineer in the more northern
areas of the mine, ie. in Sections 18 and 19, Twp 15 South, Rg 69
West, the Division appears not to have complete groundwater quality
or groundwater depth data for these wells or for this general area
of the mine. The Division also would expect CC&V to include with
the information provided any additional groundwater quality and/or
depth data gathered from exploratory drill holes within the Cresson
Mine as well as the dates and location of such sampling in order
not only to provide the most accurate representation of the
groundwater regime in the area of the mine but also to assist in
demonstrating the mine's potential, or lack thereof in certain
areas, for adverse impacts on local groundwater of possible
beneficial quality.
Hopefully, the above will assist you in responding to the
Division's May 1, 1997 letter. If you have any further questions,
please contact Berhan Keffelew, im Stevens or me.
Sincerely, ,
'~^~
H. Bruce Humphries
Supervisor, Minerals Program
97N037
