The value for total dissolved solids concentration for the
river is From recent sampling by Somerset Mining Company. The
TDS concentration for AA1 is the maximum value for the period
1983 through 1990.
Based upon the above calculation, the flow of contaminants
from the alluvium into the North Fork of the Gunnison River will
not have a measurable impact on the quality of water in the diver
or the alluvial valley floors that are downstream of the Bear No.
3 Mine.
There is another theory regarding the contamination of well
AA1 that. is worthwhile explaining. It is believed that the
source of contaminants is springs and seeps located at the inter-
face of the a.luvium and the hillside and not the coal or gob
si;ockpi.les. TJiese contaminants did not effect AA1 from 1983 to
1985 hecause of the high water level in the alluvium. The con-
t.aminants in AA1 became apparent at the same time the water level
in the alluvium dropped, because of abnormally low flows in the
river. '['his theory- may be "tested" during 1991 because the floras
in the river are expected to be closer to normal.
\IIR
S
