'
- 9 -
t
this time the ultimate use of the land, after mining, will be
as open space and general drainage concepts should be estab-
' lished for implementation during and immediately after mining.
During the course of quarry operation should an after-use be
1 established then changes and modifications to the drainage
plan can be made.
' In the previous section, an alternative was presented
wherein Strain Gulch was diverted into a detention basin corn-
' pleted in the north quarry area. This could remain as a
permanent arrangement. If the entire quarry area will revert
to unmaintained open space after operations have been completed,
a surface overflow drain channel could be constructed. Without
some maintenance the pipe underdrain system will eventually
' plug with debris. A nominal amount of maintenance will. keep
this clear if the after-use justifies the cost involved.
'
An alternate arrangement is to direct flows into the open
pit after quarrying has been completed. There are advantages
' and disadvantages to this alternative. By diverting al.l of the
flow of Strain Gulch into the pit, it will take approximately
' 6 to 10 years for water to completely fill the area. 7'h is may
adversely affect downstream water rights on Strain Gulch and
1 some provision must be made to ensure those rights are pro-
tected during periods of normal flow in Strain Gulch. This
1 open pit, which could become a lake, presents some additional
after-uses for the area and Doctor Harold Hagen of Western
' Fishery Consultants, who assisted in preparation of the Novem-
ber 1972 Thorne report, was contacted regarding the po;~sibility
of fish life in this pond. He reported excellent possibilities
' for raising either cold water or warm water types of fish but
fish would have to be periodically planted as there would be
t no spawning areas.
As there may be some interest generated on such a proposal
a brief geologic analysis of the conditions that may be encountered
1
' ~1 Leoeard Rare Consulting Water Ecy neers.lnc
