JUN-21-1999 11:05 GENERAL CHEMICgL 201 515 1985 F'. 01iby
~• a
2
Nahcolite Minerals); American Soda proposes to use ei single well
well vertical cavity process to recover disseminateci nahcolite
reserves. During the initial operation period, twelsty-six (26)
wells may be operated concurrently for a limited tune. After the
initial operating period, approximately~l5 wells will be operated
concurrently. Wells will be taken out of service r.+hea the value
of the energy input exceeds the value of the mining output.
Each well will have an injection zone interval
approximately 800 feet below the Dissolution Surface, generally
located from about 1,400 to 2,300 feet below ground surface.
Only 25 to 30 percent of the subsurface material located in the
injection zone will be removed by mining, hence solution mining
will simply create a more porous zone and the remai.aing 70 to 75
percent of the original volume will consist of oil shale and
other insoluble rock.
The principal products that American Soda iat:enda to
produce from ;,taheolite (NaHCO,) are sodium carbonate (also called
soda ash) and sodium bicarbonate (also called bak:i.ng soda).
Soda ash ie used is several industrial processes including the
manufacturing of glass, various chemicals, pulp anti paper, soaps
and detergents, water treatment products, cleaning preparations,
and other products. Sodium bicarbonate is used as a pollution
control agent (flue gas desulfurization and acid n~eutralizationl
and in the manufacturing of food and flour, pharma.:euticals and
antacids, fire extinguishers, various household products,
labarato=i+ reagents; and many other products.
y~' EPA is hereby serving notice of intent to issue a Class III
vIC Area Permit to American Soda for the extraction of nahcolite
by use of a solution mining process. 8PA has scads a preliminary
determination to approve the permit application sad by doing so,
it hoe determined that underground sources of drinking water
(U5DWS) will be protected,
PUBLIC COMMETITS
Information submitted by the applicant, as well as the
draft permit prepared by BPA, are contained in the: administrative
record for American Soda.
