CDPS EXCEEDANCE REPORT
Mine Site: COLOWYO MINE
Outfall No.: 001
Sample Taken by: Env. EnQ. - Tony Tennvson
Exceedences: Total Suspended Solids - 68 mpJL
Pernut No.: COG-600751
Sample Date: 12/28/2006
Laboratory Sample ID: L60513-01
Report Prepared by: Kurtis Blunt
Explanation:
A sample was taken on December 28, 2006 from Outfa11001. Water from this sample represented
the final remaining accumulation of stormwater collected in the bottom of the West Pit, As a result,
the quality of water filtered was extremely poor. This over-whelmed the ability of the filters to
adequately remove enough of the small suspended particles to meet the TSS requirements. When
taken the discharge water appeared to be of good quality and did not indicate any problems would be
expected with regards to effluent requirements. There was not any visible discoloration of the sample
and no visible signs of particulates. Colowyo believed in good faith that the filtration equipment was
rated and adequate to filter the quality of water present in the pit at that time. Discharge was ceased
the morning of December 29, 2006 due to insufficient water available for pumping and filtering.
Should additional water accumulate in the West Pit pumping will be resumed in the future. A letter
has been submitted to request changing the status of this 90-day permit to long term status.
Identify Support Info:
Relevant laboratory data from Outfa11001
Proposed Action:
Stormwater avenues into the bottom of the West Pit are being re-evaluated and will be modified as
necessary to minimize sediment loading from the West Pit. Colowyo will evaluate the potential
benefits and practical application of flocculating agents in the future. If there is any indication that
chemical treatment of stonnwater prior to pumping and filtering provides a substantial benefit,
Colowyo will submit further information for your review and approval.
Colowyo will not attempt to pump and filter water that exhibits the characteristics of the water that
led to this exceed nce in the future. As a result, Colowyo will manage extremely poor quality water
within the bo aries the est Pit.
Name:
Date of Submittal:
N:\CCC_P[SHQ~2L0 NQC D\21.1 CUPS Permit\^_1.1.21nspectione & Report\2006:CDP5 Excecdanec Rcport_oQl doe
