1

:~
a
i
n
a
a ,
Y
t
i
~;

I,

Some problems were identified in the analytical results for total
zinc after inspection of the first few weeks of sampling. Re-
analysis of samples which were still held by the laboratory
confirmed that the original values reported by the laboratory
were in error, sometimes by as much as two orders of magnitude.
For this reason, the early results for total zinc, which could
not be re-analysed, are not included. in Tables 6 and 8. As a
result of the analytical problems, a quality assurance program,
involving split sampling and analysis by a second laboratory, has
been recommended which is described later.
2.2 Pond F Spring Monitoring
Weekly flow and water quality monitoring of the spring issuing
for backfill material near Sedimentation Pond F commenced in
early June to establish the characteristics of the discharge.
The major objective of this monitoring is to establish whether
the discharge routed through Pond F could meet the tdPDES
discharge limitations. Since the original limitations were
imposed for surface water runoff new limitations are presently
being proposed for the Pond F outflow (point 007). Evaluation of
the data from this source is covered in a separate report but the
data is used for comparison in the evaluation of the
characteristics of inflows_to Pond D.
2.3 Ambient Stream Monitoring
A concurrent sampling program was initiated at this time which
was designed to obtain water. quality data from streams. in the
area that were above any historic mining activities. Four sites
were chosen:
'-~ Site 31. on Middle Creek ._:_ __
Sites 14 and 33 on Foidel Creek
Site 1001 on Fish Creek _.. ,_.._
Emphesis was placed on obtaining. ambient. water quality data on
parameters: which are included on existing NPDES permits, or may
be included in the forseeable future. The primary purpose of
this sampling program is to establish a data base which would
support a petition to change the existing stream water quality
standards for several parameters. The present stream standards
are believed to be lower. than average ambient conditions for
parameters such as silver and manganese. If these standards are
used_as the discharge limitations on NPDES permits, complience
becomes very difficult.
