Simpson, P.E.
Secretary
At its meeting on December 5, 2006 the Boazd of Examiners of Water Well
Construction and Pump Installation Contractors considered your request for variance
from the abandonment standards of the Water Well Construction Rules and the additional
information provided by you and Doug Stephenson, Well Inspector for the Division of
Water Resources. The Board concluded that the monitoring wells could be abandoned
pursuant to the following procedure:
• Pressure grout the steel casing in each monitoring well from as deep a depth as
can be accessed back to the surface.
• Cut the PVC and steel casings off at two to five feet below the surface.
• Weld a steel plate to the top of each steel casing.
• Backfill the excavations with native material.
Please submit a standard Well Abandonment Report for each abandoned monitoring well
within 60 days after abandonment has been completed. You can contact me at 303-866-
3581,extension 8290, ifyou have any questions.
Sincerely,
~~ ~~~
Dave McElhaney, P.G.
Chief, Geotechnical Services Branch
Cc: Jack Byers, Deputy State Engineer
Nolan Lloyd, Chief Well Inspector
Mike Boulay, CDRMS
TIMOTHY L.
