The enclosed drawings show the fish ladder design that
I incorporated into the weir design.
Utilizing the information you gave me I feel that my current de-
sign is best suited for our project based on the following reasons.
On page 3 of "Correcting Vertical Fish Barriers", September 1971, it
states that the maximum velocity of the water should be 6 to 8 times
the fish length. The maximum velocity of the water passing over our
weirs will be 2.2 feet per second. This low velocity will be slow
enough to allow passage for the size of fish found in Thompson Creeks.
The current fish ladder design reduces the maximum vertical distance
a fish will have to jump to one foot. In addition the current ladder
is designed so that water will always flow into the upper box. This
assumption is based on my calculations that the maximum horizontal
distance the water will travel when it passes over the weir will be
1.8 feet; therefore, the water will fill the upper box and drain into
the lower box at all times. Finally, the ladders will have V-notches
in them to help the fish pass over the weir when there is low flow in
the creeks.
I would appreciate hearing your comments concerning this design
before I send the 404 permit in. If you agree with the current design
I would request that you send me an approval letter that I can send
in with the application. If you would like to make some changes in
the design please call or write and tell me what you would like to
change. I have set a target date of May 31,1983 for sending the com-
pleted application to the Corp of Engineers.
Again, thank you for your help in obtaining the fish ladder infor-
mation.
Sincerely
,.,f,.~-.rG t~o,,..~~~
Scott ,]does
Environmental Coordinator
1
