This excedance was caused by
an increase in mine water inflow due to spring runoff. The Roadside South Mine is
currently idle. The mine inflows have decreased and the TSS values aze within the
pazameters. Water will be directed into sump azeas in the mine during runoff periods to
increase the retention time underground to settle the solids.
On Dischazge 004, the pH limit of 9.0 was exceeded by a value of 9.3. This high pH
value was caused by rock dusting in the area of the 3rd north mains sump. The rock dust
is a gypsum or limestone based powder that is applied to keep in compliance with the
MSHA regulations for underground coal mining. The sump capacity and routing of
water underground is being changed to provide longer detention times and dilution
potential. The values of pH have been in compliance since the rockdusting has been
completed.
Please feel free to contact the undersigned at the above address if you have any questions
concerning this transmittal.
Sincerely
Powj C mp y
William P.
