for limited impact and select regular mine applications
The Following information pertai~g to wildlife is provided for ~ by Nined Land
P.eclamation Board in their consideration of a mining permit for:
Jones East Pit/Op~an Gravel Pit
and Location of Nine
wildlife Species list:
Deer (Mule 6 White-tailed)
Pheasant
Bobwhite
Rabbit
-.?zrgered/critical species/impacted:
None that we are aware of.
Mourning Dove
Coyote
Fo x
Raptors (Transient)
Various nongame
birds, mammals and ''
reptiles
ritical habitats/vegetative communities.impacEed:
None that we are aware of.
ssessment of impact:
Minimal due to it:'s location in a short grass pasture. However, the pit will be located within
one mile of the Arkansas River, Buffalo Creek, & the Buffalo Canal. All three are valuable
riparian areas p:-oviding important habitat to local wildlife, The proper ..reclamation of this
pit could be of L;reat benefit to wildlife in the area.
=ne Reclamation recommendations (include key species/habitats for which restoration '
s designed).
Since the pit is located in an area with fairly good game bird populations and will be adjacent..
to cropland I recommend that the pit be graded 6 sloped to 3:1 or less and reseeded with grasses
and forbes that (enhance game bird nesting. Tall Wheat~Jose; Switchgrass, Sand Bluestem, Western:
Wheatgrass, Crested Wheaty~°'~nd~Side Oats Gramma along with Yellow_Clover and Ladak Alfalfa are
the recommended :species. The establishment of shrub thickets would not only provide cover but
also food for wildlife and would be an .esthetic improvement for the disturbed site. Recommended
species 'to plant, in order of preference, are Wild Plum, Buffaloberry, Chokecherry, Wild Rose,
b Sandhill Cherry. A maintenance-free system of planting the above shrubs is described by
Warren Synder in the April-May 1983 issue, of Colorado Outdoors, a Division of Wildlife public-
ation. The planting of CottonTess Cottonwoods or Russian Olives would benefit raptors and
other bird species. ~ -
~ y S~ ~, ~,~r f. ~ -
- ~-
c ~
7(.~ FF ~~ __ .. { ~ `.
I ,... ~ i /. ~,..
.pared By: Bryant D.
