'. III'II'llll~~'II III
August 14, 1997
Susan Steers III III'IIIIIIIII ail RECEIVED
O1 l0 County Road ] 57
P.o. Box 1193 AUG 15 1997
Canon City, CO 81215-1193
Larry Oehler Division of M~nerais n uoo~ogy
Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman Street, Room 2 i 5
Denver, CO 80203
RE; Parkdale Project - 112 Permit Application, File No. M-97-054
Dear Mr. Oehler;
In response to your letter dated August 6, 1997, I am objecting to the issuance of this reclamation permit
and I request public hearings on the matter for the following reasons:
Blasting five days per week of granite rock located directly above a known geological fault line
without any surveys or research into how that may affect landslides or rock slipper or even
re-activation of the fault in this azea. In a Public Forum today, our County Commissioners stated that
they did not know the geological structure of this azea -yet they issued a permit allowing Agile Stone
Systems to blast 5 days per week. At the very least there must be a geological survey taken of this
azea by an Independent Agency.
Item 24 in Agile Stone's Conditional Use Permit Application states that your department will "assure
that the property will be properly reclaimed"; however, from what I have been given to understand,
there is no reclamation process available for the bench cut mining of the mountain -only scarring.
Agile is pursuing a land swap with Bureau of Land Management to trade bottom land for more of the
mountain toblast -the scarring could conceivably marr the entire mountainside at Parkdale.
• In CUP 97-5 Agile Stone is allowed to blast between 8 a.m. & 9 a.m. Memorial Day through Labor
Day and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. all other days, excluding weekends and Federal Holidays. The permit
does not specify that they may blast only once each day -only the times during which they may blast.
This will siginificantly impact both wildlife and recreation in the area. Should you decide in favor of
their application we request that you limit further the blasting hours and days and that they may be
allowed only one blast per day.
Thank you for responding to my letter. Please do let me know when and where the public hearings will be
held so that I may take an active part. I do request that you seriously consider denying this permit.
cc: Governor Roy Romer, Senator Ken Cloutier
