42,04 APPLICATION FOR PERMIT FOR SURFACE OR UNDERGROUND MINING ACTIVITIES -- <br />MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR INFORMATION ON ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES. <br /> <br />2,04.7 Hydrology Description. <br />(1) (b) (Cont'd,) <br />air and foam are used as a drilling medium, the hydro- <br />logic conditions of the in situ rock are virtually un- <br />affected, and observation of subtle inflow or lost cir- <br />culation zones are greatly enhanced. The progress of <br />these holes was monitored in the field and recorded by <br />competent personnel. <br />Dri11 holes 60, 65, 69, and 70 were completed as moni- <br />toring wells following exploration. Refer to Section <br />2,05.6(3)(b)(iii) for further discussion of the deep <br />bedrock groundwater monitoring program. In the holes <br />(DH-62, 61, 73, 71, 72, 63, 67, 66, and 68) where con- <br />version to a monitoring well was not deemed necessary, <br />a water level was obtained prior to sealing. <br />A sufficient number of data points were obtained from <br />these drill holes to plot the potentiometric surface on <br />the map. As seen on Map 4-2, the potentiometric con- <br />tours fit the geohydrological setting of the permit <br />• area in that the saturated horizons (or potentiometric <br />surface) gently dip northward, following the structural <br />attitude of [he bedrock horizons. <br />Groundwater within the Mesaverde Formation is of sodium <br />bicarbonate type, and the specific conductance ranges <br />~3_~-~~~,~o.-]}+ifig~3(c~~, from 750 to 7,560 umhos. High mineralization and high <br />'ADS R~`~ sulfate content of this groundwater precludes the use <br />`~~n,~~~i~p ,a/~iin>~¢ for potable and stock purposes. <br />~ ( u78 <br />qj,b} ~/8g Electrical conductance and total dissolved solids val- <br />ues from Mesaverde sources are typically an order of <br />magnitude higher than similar parameters measured from <br />colluvial, near surface water sources (2000 to 3000 <br />umhos v,s. 200-800 umhos, respectively). The notable <br />difference in water quality clearly separates the two <br />groundwater systems and suggests the longer residence <br />time (and lower transmissivity) of the water within <br />bedrock Mesaverde (refer to Groundwater Appendix, Vol- <br />ume 4). <br />The interpretation of the groundwater presence in the <br />Mesaverde Formation is based on the observation of <br />Added 12/26/84 <br />Revised 03/07/85 <br />Revised 10/01/87 <br />35 <br />
