c <br />archaeological re:~nn~issar.ce of the proposed coal lease tracts in <br />iloffat; Rio i3lancn, and Routt Counties, Colorado (Arthur 1977). <br />Large corner notched projectile points are characteristic r.f the <br />Kiddle Prehisto:ic period, and there has been occupation of the Yampa <br />Basin and !lilliams Fork 1lountains from at least this time (Arthur 1977). <br />Arthur reports six sites from this period, the inhabitants of which <br />r;ere generalized r~unter-gatherers, using a variety of hunting techniques, <br />including mass. hunting of large animals such as bison and pronghorn. To <br />date, no large I;ill sites have been located in this area. <br />The Late Pre^istoric ~eried is characterized by small sid% notched <br />p:,ints v:ith basal notci:e~ (.."~lullo.y 1958:15]). Tr:ese sites are Setter <br />' represented in ~h,e stu~:y area than the earlier ones. The Historic period <br />is a ccntinuatien of tl;e Late Prehistoric period. However, there is <br />• evidence cf the, introduction of historic trade goods and tl:e Morse. Sites <br /> of these periods are most likely attributed to Ute and Shoshoni groups <br />r:ho were knovrn to he in the area at this time. <br />In the late 19th century,.Euroanrericans began settling in the Yampa <br />..°.asin. Interaction b.~ilreen /lr.er-ican Indians and Eurcar•.ericar.s decreased <br />greatly after tlr~ sleeker t'assacre of 1880. At this time, the iio!'thern <br />t!tes r;ere re•::;•~:c::: ro the Uintah Reservation in western Utah. <br />EPIVIRO!~MEiiT <br />The pro;;ect area elevation rznges between 6200 ft. and 7460 ft.
