<br /> <br />IyTRODUCTIOPI <br /> <br />This project was designed to assess the nature of cultural resources <br />contained in the area of Utah International Incorporated's Craig under- <br />ground project near Craig, Colorado. The project area consists of 1120 <br />ac. of land (Figs. 1, 2, 3), located seven to eight air miles south- <br />southwest of Craig, and includes portions of Sec. 4, 5, 7, 8, and 9, <br />TSn, R91w. <br />The reconnaissance was performed between October 11-14, 1976, by <br />Paul R. ililliams and Carol Legard, representing the Laboratory of Public <br />. Archaeology (LOPA). Ail work was supervised by Calvin H. Jennings, <br />Director of LOPA. The reconnaissance was conducted under Federal <br />• Antiquities Permit 76-CO-011 issued to Colorado State University. <br /> Laboratory work was carried out shortly following fieldwork. <br />The project was carried out for Utah International Incorporated, <br />San Francisco, California. Mr. Roger Nelson was the firm's representa- <br />tive. Jim Daniels, of Utah International, provided liaison with~LOFA <br />and assisted the survey party in locating the project area and defining <br />its boundaries. <br />LITERATURE SEARCH <br />A literature search was not conducted prior to initiation of the <br />project. However, ifie Laboratory of Public Archaeology undertook a <br />reconnaissance of proposed coal lease tracts in Moffat, Rio Blanco, and <br /> P.outt Counties, Colorado (Arthur 1977) during the suuurer of 1977.
