maps, and inflows have not been correlated with the expression
of stream channels in Apache Canyon, a:Long the Purgatoire, in
Ciruela Canyon, or in Santistevan andlamora Canyons. •,
Impacts of Secondary or Retreat Mininer on Alluvial
Valley Floors. WFC conducted resource investigations and
potential impact analysis for secondary or retreat mining at
the Golden Eagle Mine. The following assessment discusses
existing resources of side-canyon areas of the Purgatoire River
within the current permit term and future mining areas.
Apache Canyon is south of the N~=_w Elk Mine and west of
the Golden Eagle Mine. It drains an area of 7,566 acres which
is covered primarily by woodland. Grazing and wildlife are the
primary land uses within the canyon. Mining is also a minor
land use with two ventilation shafts and a power suY>station
located in the lower canyon. WFC believes it is nece~;sary to
maintain the land uses of wildlife habitat and grazing in
Apache Canyon after mining is completed. Basin Resource's would ~
take appropriate mitigative measures if mining seriously
impacted the potential for their use. It is highly unlikely
surface flows would be impacted. It i:s more likely windmills
could be rendered unusable. Basin Resources could, in the
latter case, drill new wells for stock water ox- build
additional impoundments for stock water. It is impose;ible to
predict at this time. It is Basin Resource's intent to ensure
water is available for livestock stocking and distribution.
In summary, Apache Canyon is not considered an Alluvial
valley floor because of the absence of subirrigat:ion, no
defined alluvial aquifer, no potential for flood irrigation,
and no historic land uses which would indicate alluvia]. valley
floor conditions.
Ciruela Canyon lies to the south of the Golden Eagle
Mine and drains an area of 1,745 acres. As with Apache Canyon,
Ciruela also has a woodland cover with a herbaceous valley
2.05-45 (Revised 04/27/94)
