and maintenance of these features. The major part of this
•
investigation was to provide geologic inputs to Peabody Western
Coal Company (PWCC) for its design efforts. Areas were t~ be
identified where problems exist, or where they might occur :s a
result of construction. Appropriate recommendations for drill Hole
testing were also to be made. Amuedo and Ivey, Inc. is referred to
as "AI" hereafter in this report.
The scope of the work included office geologic evaluation of
aerial photography (photogeology), field confirmation of
photogeologic mapping, additional mapping in the field, and
conferring with personnel of PWCC, and with its soils engineering
subcontractor, Northwest Colorado Consultants, Inc. (NCC). The
scope of the mapping extended southward from the origin of Haul
Road A to the terminus of Haul Road B.

The paucity of outcrops along the alignment made it necessary
to map, by photogeologic methods, a relatively large area in order
to extend geologic control by projection into critical parts of the
alignment where rock outcrops were sparse.
The northern (A) haul-road alignment passes through an area
underlain primarily by shale with some interbedded sandstones.
This rock assemblage weathers to smooth slopes, and outcrops are
rare except where a few drainages have exposed bedrock. In the
southern (B) part of the area, predominant and more resistant
sandstone forms a more varied and slightly more complex geology
which, in most places along the alignment, is obscured by dense
vegetation growth that covers rock outcrops.
•
2
